A motor turns the drum and a fan pulls air through it. In a vented dryer, a heating element warms that air and it leaves through a hose to the outside. Condenser dryers cool the damp air and collect the water in a tank, and heat pump dryers reuse the heat so they use less power. Sensors and thermostats watch the temperature and moisture so the dryer knows when to stop.
Lint is the enemy of all three. Blocked filters and ducts make a dryer slow, hot and, in the worst cases, unsafe.

On LG dryers, codes like D80, D90 and D95 mean the airflow is restricted, usually by lint in the filter or duct. Other brands show similar warnings in their own way. Fixing the airflow often fixes the heat problem too.
