The compressor pumps refrigerant through the condenser coils, where it releases heat, then through the evaporator inside, where it absorbs heat from your food. Fans push cold air between the freezer and fridge sections, a thermostat or control board decides when to run, and a defrost heater stops ice from choking the evaporator.
