Water is pumped over a very cold evaporator plate, where it freezes layer by layer into cubes. When the ice is thick enough, a sensor starts the harvest: warm gas or a heater loosens the cubes so they drop into the bin. A condenser and fan get rid of the heat, and a bin sensor stops production once the bin is full.
Scale on the evaporator and dust on the condenser are the two biggest causes of slow or poor ice.
